Last weekend the TMD guys got together with several friends to work on a huge collab at Netch Park. Stray, Vents, Brato, 2Flash and Roid all chipped in to make something epic. How crazy is it that I'm taking shots of Roid - puzzle time *click*

After the madness of the Kings of Style Battle it was nice to catch up with everyone and get a chance to reacquaint myself with shooting writers.

On that note I have to say that Sofles is killing it with his ability to switch between loose and ultra tight styles that can cut you with their lines. Was really awesome to have him come onboard as TMD's latest member - dude is mad talented and his ability to be an all round top bloke is the clincher.

Saves, Askew and Phat1 are monsters on the move with the creative direction they are heading in and it's always cool to clown with Has and Kost - you the men fullas.

Last Friday my wife and I decided to pack up and head north away from what was to be one crazy night in Auckland. We passed the slowly filling train stations and the flag festooned cars to what many in Aotearoa (New Zealand) refer to as the Winterless North.

We based ourselves in Paihia and were intending on heading to Ahipara on the Saturday but that fell through so we did what every New Zealander should do and that was visit Waitangi, the birthplace of what was to be the Treaty that was meant to define the rights of Tangata Te Whenua and the new immigrants to New Zealand back in 1840. I grabbed shots of the impressive and imposing Maori Waka down by the water and then headed up to the main grounds. My favourite part of the day was lying on the lawn staring up at the flagpoles and counting clouds - Northland is such a calming and beautiful place. Got distracted by some tiny little flowers in the lawn and then headed over to the two contrasting buildings that make up the treaty grounds proper - kind of got bored in the colonial house and had more fun in the meeting house.

Went back to town and then took off to Kerikeri and with the sun setting and options running low we checked out some old stone building but I had more fun with the local birdlife - man the chickens around here are staunch. This one Rooster tried to step me out in the carpark - come down south Mr Chicken and see how far that gets you :) Shot to Flickc of Kaikohe for the vivid tag on the bridge, very artistic. Left Kawakawa and some wierd looking fluff tree behind and shot back to Paihia. Met a cool 9 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback named Jagar and ate Fush and Chups on the beach.

All things come to an end and we had to head back to Auckland but before that we managed a stopover in Kawakawa so I could check out a toilet - not just any toilet but a Hundertwasser toilet - choice as. Had a coffee, took in some tattoo work from a magazine and then headed back to Auckland. The view on the way back to Auckland wasn't that promising with some really ugly looking storm clouds on the horizon.

We picked on Ben this time around - you might recognise him from my blog :)

I shot these freehand on as slow a shutterspeed as I could handle and the ISO cranked to a paltry 400.

Next week we pick on someone else........oh Meeeeeeeesh....what you up to next week?

So with the help of Luka I managed to go along to the last Pecha Kucha which was in the really cool setting of the Auckland Boxing Association gym on Eden Terrace - man that place is cool from a brotographers standpoint :)

The lineup of speakers were an ecclectic bunch with topics ranging from Frocks on Bikes to the best damned Cray Fisher to ever drop a pot in the ocean.

I cannot express how much fun these are and if you get the chance to attend one please, please take it!

The Port

So Brendini and I wandered off to Port Waikato a few weekends ago to see how winter was doing on the Wild South West coast of Auckland - and it was doing just fine. If by fine you mean smashed sand dunes, cliff erosion and dead birds.

The thing I love about this place is it's lack of pretense - the place is what it is and sometimes that isn't pretty but that's what adds to it's charm. It may not be Hahei but for sheer blood and guts I reckon it's a winner.

So this was a fun gig - fun in that it looked like it was attended by alot of the people I used to see when I was clubbing waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when flat top fades and cross colour gears were hot. Actually it might have even been back when we used to rock suits to the Coliseum.

The lead up acts were on the most part ok - some advice though Ben and Thomas, if you are going to butcher End of the Road, don't do it when there is an RnB heavy hitter in the building.

Nr McKnight did a show that covered his formative years and detailed the influences on his writing and singing. Dude is a true showman and the set was a great insight into his craft. Shot.

David Dallas - dude, love the album.

I have to give credit to David and his team with regards to the direction his career has taken. It's refereshing to see an artist making a difference by being more or less themselves. His music and the means by which he has promoted it are clean and don't wander into the traps of cliche many of our local emcees tend to pidgeon hole themselves into.

The album release party was crazy and showed the amount of support he has garnered over the years - top bloke.

PNC - don't ever change bro, your antics keep this brotographer amused for days.

You guys should do more stuff with my bro, I hear he raps and stuff too.

One of the things I love about Graffiti is it's ability to take it's environment absorb it into it's body and make it something even better than it was before. The unattractive becomes appealing and the artwork gains from the inclusion be it the textures it's applied to or the area it becomes a part of.

I've managed to get some work with the good folk at www.nzfighters.com and I was to meet with Crispin and go over anything I had questions about regarding shooting those with pugilisitc tendancies. The meeting was in town at a coffe bar on K Road so I had a bit of time to spare and decided to go and check out Poynton Terrace so see the damage done by the council buffers - man is the place a creative sinkhole now. It made me sad.

To get over this I went and grabbed some other shots around the area and given I dind't have my tripod I think I did ok :)

Oh yeah, the meeting was all good and I get to shoot my first lot of fighters this Saturday - yay me!

So I managed to sneak along to a sneak preview of DJ Sirvere's Air Jordan collection and DAAAAAAAAAAMN as dude got way too many shoes :P

Given Phil's obsession with all things Jordan-like it was a rare glimpse offered by the man to see the culmination of years of dedication to a shoe and brand that still holds much sway. Hearing that a few of Phil's early samples were once used when mowing lawns out South (you can take the boy out of the hood :)) was hilarious to me, most likely stroke inducing for some others.

This wasn't just a good chance to see some beautiful kicks but I also managed to catch up with some old friends and make some new - loving the beard Matty J, great to speak to Sarah about the power of an orchestra's string section and Leon - you keep being Leon :)

The Society and the Harbour Bridge

Last night we thought we would take a gander at the goings on under the Bridge out by Westhaven Marina at night and you know what - only the fisherfolk and the security guys seem to be doing anything.

Westhaven is much like Weymouth marina - it has water, seagulls and alot of bad lighting - ok it's not as slick as Weymouth but that's what happens when you have more money than sense :P

My favourite shots are of the gnarly bits under the bridge and as much as people like getting shots of the thing all lit up I like the other bits you don't see like the rubbish under it and all the barb wire along the scaffold below it.

Just want to say sorry to the folk sleeping in the van when I was sizing up the shot of the light by the motorway - my camera is pretty noisy aye. GO THE FREEDOM CAMPERS!! Just don't leave poo by the bridge.

I spent a good portion of my early working career in Newmarket as an employee of the ANZ bank which was handy as far as setting me up to buy my first house went. I used to spend a fair amount of time at the Truetone store, on the corner of Remuera Road and Broadway, going through the imported CD's looking for that something different from all the "NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC" compilations out there at the time. The Newmarket club was also a good place for a feed of beurger and chips and a mean game of pool on their rugby field sized tables.

Coming back years later to wander around it at night with the Hombres in the Society I see how much it really is the centre of the Consumer world that lives in Auckland. I suppose every city needs it's shopping precincts but looking at all the shiny glass and expensive price tags I'm kind of glad I am not overly obsessed with shiny things and expensive price tags anymore. I miss the old train station and find the new one a little vacant, probably more a result of being there at 9pm when hardly anyone is around.

As easy as it would have been to just shoot traffic light trails and the bright reflections on all the shop fronts I found the work on the overbridge, dimly lit rubbish bins and abstract shadows much more interesting.

I wonder whatever happened to the Millenium Countdown clock thing that used to be at the entrance to 277 - Cameron Brewer is probably using it as an egg timer.

The Society goes on down to Surrey Crescent

The Society went along to Sureey Crescent lastnight on our weekly photography excursion and it turned out to be a bit of a wierd night with verbal abuse, homeless people and glowing plastic animals.

Who would have thought it but according to one very angry local, modern cameras are capable of taking photos of his wife through a dairy and the solid walls of his house. We weren't there when the accusations were flying but we were quickly filled in about the situation by Torbs and Reese when we arrived. After more rambling and gesturing at us, the angry local took our license plate numbers and we decided to move on.

Further into West Lynn I started grabbing some images of a few of the shops and about 20 minutes into doing this I got to watch the clumbsiest neighbourhood watch wannabe attempt to pretend he wasn't keeping tabs on me. It was beyond pathetic and had me wishing I had stayed in the relative normality of South Auckland.

Despite this initial run of stupidity I did get some shots I liked and I got to hang with The Society again after a bit of a break - really cool to see Nikau and Misha out and about too. Cool guys and a welcome addition to the clique :)

One of my favourite shots is the dubious signage that refers to something called the "White Service". Maybe it was my earlier encounters that coloured my perception but this made me snigger a little. Reading into it a bit more than I need to maybe?

Laneway 2011

Now this was fun! Didn't know what to expect as the only bands I knew were Emerald City (cool fullas) and Ladyhawke. Turned out to be heaps of fun with a very different crowd again (hipster kids I see you!) from those that I had encountered at Big Day Out and Raggamuffin but they were good peoples.

Emerald Cuty, WarPaint (love the drummer!), Holy F**K and Lawrence Arabia were my highlights. Can someone please tell Len Brown to never, ever - everevereverever sing a song again!

After downing all the Ice Tea I could ever want it was good to be able to use the flash loos in the Aotea Centre (thanks Media pass :)).

Oh yeah and to the apartment dwellers - take the weekend off and leave us to our fun ya grinches!

Raggamuffin 2011

I was pretty happy with the outcome from this years Raggamuffin as far as photography and transport went - last year I had fun up until Shaggy came on and then after unsuccessfully trying to track down one of my friends I spent the night sleeping in the car in a paddock in Rotorua.

This year my wife took care of the transport and I got myself looked after by brothers Leon and Mark and good friend and awesome shooter Steve Field kept me in good steed with drinks and food so I had a great time of it.

These are only a few shots but veteran locals Che Fu and the crew repped it alongside legends like the Original Wailers, Maxi Priest, Ky-Mani Marley and my two favourites of the night - Jimmy Cliff and Mary J Blige.

The major sponsor this year was Cadbury who seem to be going on a bit of a charm offensive to get back some support lost with the whole Palm Oil debacle but you'd think giving out chocolate on one of the hottest days of the year in a place notorious for cooking the punters would register as a possible failure of an idea - apparently they didn't.

You have got to go to one of these events as there is nothing like it anywhere else and the crowd is something to be experienced, from the weed haze to the goat stew on offer at some of the food stalls this place is buzzy. Love this concert.

Another site I had been meaning to stop and shoot at crossed off the list. This was actually pretty cool to shoot in and I was surprised that I could walk through but pretty happy that I could none the less :)

It's the little things in places like this that make them fun to shoot, from the old Rugby League poster in the main room, to the diddle on the back door and the old taps in the back room. I could've stayed in there and shot all afternoon but I didn't want to push my luck.

TMD musings

It's been a busy month for your favourite brotographer and I have got a few things to add to the old blog so let's get started with this :)

Featured are snaps of work done by the crew and in collaboration with others - there is also a shot the Cook Street Studio cat, I have decided to name him Santiago.

The final few shots of this are the Work in Progress shots of Askews homage to Revok, one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. I met him at our exhibition fundraiser last year and he was not only humble but very clued in to what we as a crew were wanting to do with our collective creativity.

The Society and Victoria Park

After a two week lay off the Society got back together lastnight and went on a little tiki tour of Victoria Park.

Around this time the place is swarming with cricketers finishing up their practise sessions and gym folk heading home to eat their slice of tuna with a hearty helping of scent of a carbohydrate :P

Grabbed a shot of a bus patron in a sea of passing car lights, a building full of people getting their meeting on, some Oak trees and a pretty cool playground made even cooler by my fisheye lens - ooooh yeeeah!

So, I'm sitting in Borders on Queen Street in Auckland waiting for the Foo Fighters concert and I'm wondering - what to do, what to do....

I grabbed this shot of what's around me, zoomed in a bit to see what others were reading and then looked over the rail to see what was on sale. I get concentration from one corner - consternation from the cover of a magazine that another patron is reading (I think it was echoing the feelings of said patron who reacted when the camera went "click") and curiosity from the customers below.

The Society and the Fig Tree

So the Society got together lastnight and we tried something different and setup some studio strobes on front lawn at one of our homes. Now what to do with strobes, clowns and a fig tree - I know! Let's try some jumping :)

Two Hands get their Charity gig on

So I spotted something on Facebook lastweek announcing that Two Hands tattoo studio on Ponsonby Road in Auckland were going to be puttin on a charity tattoo session with all proceeds going to help the good folk in Christchurch. Sounded like something a Brotographer should go along and check out - and go along I did :)

First off I have to they have one of the coolest locations and the setup of the shop is pretty unique with plenty of natural light and styley flash art by the artists, something nice for the clients to stare at while the needles do their work.

I got there pretty late into the afternoon but there was still a steady stream of clients keen to take up the offer and give with the gift money in exchange for some fine line work and inky goodness. I walk into Josh's studio and who should I find grinning and bearing it in the hot seat but brother Mark Barber - the Man! His tattoo of choice was a sweet little tea cup and saucer job and as this was getting put on we caught up and nattered on about all things Christchurchian and photgraphic.

In their other studio spaces I caught up with Capilli and got a chance to admire his beautiful collection of Americana styled illustrations - so cool to meet a Samoan tattooist that has branched into a filed of tattooing not normally associated with Poly artists......I might me coming back to see him about some work MUAHAHAHAH!

I love hanging around tattoo parlours/studios and this was a blast.

Handball Afternoon with TMDeez and Wert159

I caught up with Kost, Saves and Wert159 out at the ruins of what was once Tamaki Girls College as they set about putting some work in as a dedication to the people of Christchurch.

I've never been to this place before and it was eye opening not just for the two freestanding walls, canvases of choice for different writers, but the locals are a crazy bunch with a slant towards arson and self promotion. I couldn't stay long enough to get a finshed shot of Saves and Wert's wall but I am hoping from the shots you get an idea of their intent - Kost dedicated his to brother Paully from Christchurch.

Black Milk @Zen

The night before the Big Day Out Black Milk graced the smaller and more intimate stage at the Zen bar in Auckland giving his legion of fans something to scream about.

Really stoked I got to see him live as I knew that the timetable for the BDO would mean I would miss him as I would have to cover MIA during his timeslot - we'll not mention that his Big Day Out set was on during the middle of a summer Monsoon - oh wait I just did :)

The Society looks at rustier side of Onehunga

On Monday the Society went on it's usual little hunt for things to take photos of and after some discussion and debate we opted for Onehunga.

After some fence jumping and junk yard dog dodging I found some cool things that piqued my interest - like the junked out Ford and the cool grey building with no signage. I also found out where all the clothing bins go to die and what it means to own a Jag :)

Later on we found ourselves in the cemetary behind Waikaraka Park and as freaky as I find the place I really loved the headstones and the Angels that occupy them.

I have been shooting on and off on Monday nights with a collective group of photographers named "THE SOCIETY". We formed last year and this year we aim to carry on the goal of developing our individual skills and styles. We are open to anyone joing in with us on our ventures and all you really need is a desire to shoot and a willingness to take rules apply them and then smash them.

This set is made up of shots in and around Auckland - from Penrose, the CBD and the Domain.

If you are keen to tag along we usually head out on Monday evenings and every now and then we will setup studio sessions with lights and whatever space we can find.

Tales from the suburbs

First actual photo post for the year on my blog and it's got nothing to do with Graf or night shoots or even portraits - no the star of my first set is my lawn :)

Seriously, you should have seen it - the thing looked like something that could hide a tribe of Pygmies. It's been 6 weeks since I had last cut it and with all the sun and the rain we have had over our summer it took off and began to even make our dogs worry.

So this Sunday just gone I bit the bullet, opened up the back of the mower and took to trying to tame the beast! Let's just say in the time it took to grow that I also had trouble getting to all the dog poo and that was a lesson that came back to get me after 2 hours of getting pelted with grass and some other....er...stuff.

My last batch of shots from THE MIAMI DREAM and ART BASEL/PRIMARY FLIGHT 2010.

Well I have to say that the whole event was an amazing experience and I couldn't have gone over with a better bunch of people! We caught up with some old friends and I made a whole bunch of new ones.

Everything in the United States is BIG - not too sure what's up with the mannequins there but hey - that's South Beach :)

On our last few days there we got to do our tourist thing and I finally wandered over to the Miami Ink studio - sweeeeet. It was sad saying goodbye as TMD split up and went in various directions around the world but at the same time it was so good to be back home.

Keep an eye out for the final versions of both the TMD and Ironlak team walls. Once I confirm a few details I will chuck up details on each soonish.

MIAMI X UPDATERSIMS

Got back from the United States yesterday and I managed to crawl out of bed this morning after a really good nights sleep to continue providing snaps from the MIAMI DREAM tour.

This lot of photos also documents my wanderings in and around some of the shows put on in the Wynwood Design district. The retrospective show featuring PHASE2 was awesome - it's good to actually see some of the work that kicked off alot of graffiti dreams in the canvas as it were. PHASE2 is the best ninja ever.

The foundations for the TMD wall had been laid the day before and the crew went about solidifying the concept and turning up the heat on everyone else.

That night we went along to a show featuring Revok, Rime, London Police and a whole heap of other artists - such a great mix of work. Revok's huge sculpture of signs and wood and other assorted "stuff" was eyeopening and a huge contrast to what I am used to seeing but it worked so well - sorry the only shot of it I have is in the background of the photo of Vans and Diva.

Later that night Charlie bought over Chris Nunez (of Miami Ink fame) to our compound and I got my fanboy on - thanks to Ben for taking the photo - sorry Charles it's the only one I have of us and I couldn't photoshop you some open eyes!

I went wandering later and got the shots of the Ironlak boys gettting there paint on (along with Lango painting with the aid of headlights from Steel's car. Shot Hazer and Mare's pieces and then realised I had wandered into some dodgey territory and legged back to our compound after being followed for a block by someone in a car that decided not to use it's headlights - dumb move on my part in an area I don't know at 2am. I also got to meet Mare and grabbed a shot of him and for Bobbito.

Overall a productive day.

MIAMI UPDATE X PART TWO

More crazy times from Miami.

The days have been pretty hectic and I have been unintentionally giving my fisheye lens a workout with some of the work in around the Primary Flight compounds.

The sun has been a killer these last few days and the evening brings no respite with the drop in temperature very apparent especially if you happen to be wearing shorts. The guys have worked like machines and the completed shots of the wall are going to be up soon but in the meantime I will continue to drip feed the shots of what we have encountered on our days here in Miami.

The completed wall opposite ours is just awesome - How and Nosm killed it and the detail and scale of it especially given it's just the two of them is a credit to their artistic skill and work ethic - machines!

We have been lucky enough to have this crazy Ice Cream truck come around to each compound with free ice cream and chips over the last few days and it's been a real bonus - FREE I TELLS YA! I have met quite a few other photographers from all over the US and it's been a buzz. Martha Cooper was ambushed by me and I am so stoked to have met her as well as had the opportunity to grab her portrait.

Art Basel is amazing and when the lights come on the whole place switches gear down at Wynwood and it just becomes this giant crazy carnival of art and art fans - so so so crazy.

One of the coolest people I have met is a local by the name of RED who has a story for everything and the charisma to make you listen. So many people have been welcoming to this little posse of NZrs that it's making it hard to want to leave.
